“The Secret Behind the Curtains” by Tuncer Tonun

On 16th February 2019, nine designers competed for the title of Britain’s Top Designer at Fashions Finest AW'19 show in London. The race to the title was observed by a panel of industry judges: stylist to the stars Bernard Connolly, celebrity and fashion photographer Joe Alvarez, fashion editor and media personality Sarah Mulindwa and TV presenter and stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones.

Rising Turkish designer Tuncer Tonun took home the prestigious award with his remarkable Haute-Couture collection “The Secrets Behind the Curtains”, made from the recycled traditional curtains that featured in several homes across Turkey throughout the 1980s, including Tonun’s own childhood home. The collection was an authentic and unapologetic homage to Tonun’s heritage, with the flamboyant yet refreshing looks rendering the Congress Centre on Russell Street to silence; every spine stood to attention, every head turned and every phone raised to capture the stunning debut.

Tonun used various curtains for his creative collection embraced from Anatolia such as Ağrı, Iğdır, Niğde, Şanlıurfa and Konya, with Turkey’s national bold red colour being adorned across all the looks like a prominent motif. The designer’s ethical approach to recycling old materials makes his pieces environmentally friendly as well as fashion-conscious. It is an applaudable choice in today’s climate of fast fashion and over-consumption, differentiating Tonun from other high-end fashion houses.

The collection’s concept and backstory are perhaps what makes the collection so powerful, with “The Secret Behind the Curtains” symbolising domestic life as a woman in Eastern Turkey during the 1980s. The role of women in East Turkey was different to that of a European woman, wherein the Southeastern Anatolia regions, in particular, many women faced widespread oppression including domestic violence, forced marriages, and honour killings. With Tonun growing up in this period, the designer admitted that these curtains served as the only colour in his life as a child; they were the first thing he would see when he woke up and the last thing he would see before he fell asleep. Tonun vowed to be like the tulips that make up the motif on the fabric, rising from the bottom up – and after taking the crown as Britain’s Top Designer this year with his spectacular Haute-Couture collection, it is clear that Tuncer Tonun is a name to look out for these upcoming seasons.

Tonun’s spectacular collection at one of London Fashion Week’s hottest fashion events received immense interest from the press and a number of photographers and videographers. at VR AGENCY London photography and video production team covered Tonun’s journey exclusively throughout the day via video and photographic content, the two are currently working on editorial, look book and short film projects.
